Wine Could Be Tonic For The Brain

LONDON: A glass and a half of wine a day could help stave off
neuro
degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's
according to
research publishing Thursday.
Italian scientists, reporting in the British journal New
Scientist, said a
natural chemical produced by vines and concentrated in both
grapes and wine
triggers a seven-fold increase in the activity and effectiveness
of an
enzyme called mapkinase. Mapkinase stimulates and regenerates
nerve cells.
Alberto Bertelli and his team at Milan University said they had
tested the
chemical - called - reservatrol - on human neural nerves and
found it made
the cells grow small extensions through which they could connect
with
neighboring cells. According to the team, the process can be
replicated in
people by drinking a glass and a half of wine a day.
"Reservatrol allows the brain cells to get themselves
connected to one
another again. It is this reconstruction that which reactivates
the ability
of the elderly to remember," Bertelli said. "By daily
reinforcing these
contacts, we can prevent neuro degeneration," he added.

PARIS (AP) -
FEBRUARY 18, 1998 The French scientist who showed the world that
wine is good
for the heart has a new discovery: Two to three glasses of wine a
day
reduces death rates from all causes by up to 30 percent.
"I've always suspected this," said Serge Renaud, whose
findings appeared
Wednesday in the journal Epidemiology. "Wine protects not
only against heart
disease but also most cancers." Renaud's study of 34,000
middle-aged men
living in eastern France supports what has become known as "the
French
paradox": Frenchmen who eat lots of saturated fat but still
live a long
tune. Results were the same for smokers, nonsmokers and former
smokers, he
said, and there were no differences between white collar and
working-class
drinkers. Recent studies in the United States found that a drink
of almost
any alcohol can lower death rates by reducing the risk of
cardiovascular
disease. Renaud, however, maintains that wine also acts against
other heart
ailments and cancers because of the anti-oxidant action of
polyphenol
compounds in grapes.
"Wine is a more diluted form of alcohol, which is important
to the body, and
if taken moderately at mealtimes it is easily absorbed," he
explained. After
four glasses a day, Renaud warned, wine has an adverse effect on
death
rates. Although it still protects the heart, excess drinking
raises the
danger of cancers and liver disease. Renaud set off a California
wine boom
in 1991 when he outlined his French-paradox theory in an
interview on the
CBS television news magazine "60 Minutes."
"It started a huge controversy," the 70-year-old
researcher recalled,
chuckling. "The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms
challenged me
to show numbers. Well, here they are." In fact, he had
already made his case
in a 1992 article in the medical journal Lancet. He reported that
20-30
grams daily of alcohol can reduce the risk of coronary heart
disease by at
least 40 percent.
Alcohol protects the heart mainly by acting on platelets in the
blood to
prevent clotting, he found. Subsequent studies elsewhere
supported these
findings. In the Epidemiology article, Renaud reported a 30
percent
reduction in death rates from all causes from 2-3 glasses of wine
a day, a
35 percent reduction from cardiovascular disease, and an 18-24
percent
reduction from cancer.
He plans a second article later this year with a more detailed
analysis of
his sampling.

"Wine

with the
prestigious INSERM unit at the University of Bordeaux. His book,
"Healthy

Bordeaux, you know
instinctively that wine is good for you," Renaud said.
"My grandparents,
their friends, all lived to be 80 or 90. I knew there was some
special
reason. During the 1970s, he began to work quietly to research
the subject
at the INSP,RM unit in Lyon. He is a strong advocate of the
Mediterranean

Renaud
laments a steady drop in wine consumption among many Frenchmen,
who these
days take less time for meals and relaxation.
"The Italians still drink a lot of wine," he said.

CAN WINE FIGHT CANCER?
One of nature's
most potent cancer-fighting compounds, quercetin, has been
isolated in red wine.
Research shows that quercetin, also found in onions and garlic,
has the
ability to block the action of the human oncogene (cancer gene)
known as
H-RAS and keep it from converting normal cells into cancerous
ones.
According to research announced in 1991 and conducted at the
University of
California, Berkeley and at Georgetown University, quercetin is
inactive as
found in food, but is activated into its cancer-fighting form by
fermentation or by bacteria in the human intestinal tract.
Epidemiological studies have linked high consumption of foods
containing
quercetin with lower incidences of stomach, intestine and other
cancers.
"Quercetin is a power anti-cancer compound," said
Terance Leighton,
Professor of Biochemistry at the University of California,
Berkeley, who led
the study. "There is even some suggestion that compounds,
such as quercetin
and others, may be responsible for the reduced levels of coronary
artery
disease found among moderate wine consumers."
In a study conducted by researchers at Cornell University, the
potential for
wine to prevent cancer was demonstrated in laboratory mice. The
investigators were studying the ability of ethyl carbamate (also
known as
urethane) to cause cancer. Since ethyl carbamate is present in
trace amounts
in some wines, they administered this substance to animals in
several ways:
in water, in plain alcohol, in white wine and in red wine. The
animals
receiving the ethyl carbamate in water and in alcohol had higher
levels of
cancer than the control animals. Those receiving it in white wine
actually
had lower levels of cancer than the controls. Those receiving it
in red wine
had the lowest levels of all!

component in the Greek villager's diet to enhancing health and
longevity.
This includes wine as part of this optimal diet. Wine is consumed
and almost
always during meals, they state in their paper.
The favorable effects of consuming wine as part of a meal receive
further
support from a new study that analyzed how wine with dinner
affected the
composition of lipids (fats) in the bloodstream. A. Van Tol and
colleagues
at Erasmus University in Rotterdam report in the European Journal
of
Clinical Investigation that wine consumption with dinner compared
with
mineral water conferred a positive influence on triglyceride,
total
cholesterol and beneficial HDL-cholesterol that remained
detectable until
early the next morning. Their findings are based on 11 days of
controlled
diet and blood analysis on eight healthy male volunteers ages 45
-55.
In addition, wine's reputation as a mealtime beverage with
positive health
attributes received anew boost from a study recently published in
the
British Medical journal. Researchers led by Dr. Martin Weisse of
West
Virginia University report that both red and white wine
efficiently wipe out
bacteria responsible for most illnesses caused by food.
While the study is preliminary, done in petri dishes rather than
on humans,
the results are dramatic. About ten million colony-forming units
of
shigella, salmonella, and E coli bacteria were added to red wine,
white
wine, bismuth saticylate and solutions of pure alcohol and
tequila. Wine was
three to four times as effective as bismuth salicylate, the
active
ingredient in Pepto-Bismol, in eradicating the bacteria, the
researchers
report. The tequila and alcohol were even less effective.
Research is especially active now on the phenolic compounds front.
At least
half a dozen studies have just been published providing further
evidence of
the beneficial antioxidant properties of wine phenolics. Studies
also
continue to associate moderate consumption of wine and alcohol
with lower
risk of disease conditions such as arthritis and diminished bone
density." -unknown author

IT IS SAID THAT RED WINE HEALS EVERYTHING.
On Sunday, November 5/ CBS 60 Minutes disproved that old saying, "Lightning never strikes twice in the same place." The highly respected in-depth news program updated its original ground-breaking wine and health story with a new report featuring a couple of new twists. Veteran anchor Morley Safer highlighted an extensive new Danish study that found a strong association between moderate wine consumption and decreased mortality. The ten-minute segment also included more assertive statements on wine and health from scientists confirming that the amount of supporting data has dramatically increased in just the past few years.
Dr. Curtis Ellison, one of the original French Paradox investigators, expressed his doubts about the legitimacy of a blanket abstinence public health message. "I think that message is not supported by scientific data now," he told Safer. "I think it's time for health agencies to say, 'Let's give a balanced message.' Excess alcohol is very bad for public health, for individual health, but moderate amounts will most likely prevent heart disease."
Among more than 13,000 men and women aged 30 to 70 who were tracked from 1976 to 1988, wine consumers had half the risk of dying of those who never drank wine.
Almost exactly four years ago to the date, 60 Minutes gave a phenomenal boost to the scientific evidence that moderate wine consumption with meals helped prevent heart disease. Then Safer had interviewed Dr. Ellison, from Boston University's School of Medicine, and Dr. Serge Renaud, from France's health research agency INSERM, about their new research on what was called the French Paradox. The two scientists had found that despite similar fat intake, France's heart attack rate was one-third that of the U.S. A key factor they attributed to this was the French custom of drinking wine with meals.
The most recent program replayed some of the earlier footage, introduced with the comment by Safer that "the good news for those of you who like to have a glass of wine with dinner is that science has not changed its mind. In fact, the evidence now, four years later is even stronger."
Along with new interviews with both Drs. Ellison and Renaud, the program interspersed clips of their presentations at VinExpo, the wine industry trade show held in Bordeaux, France, last June. The program included Dr. Ellson's comment in his speech that abstinence from alcohol is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease.
In a follow-up interview, Dr. Renaud stressed that antioxidants in addition to alcohol are likely to be responsible for wine's beneficial effects. At the time of the original broadcast, this key association was not yet established.
A major highlight of the recent segment was the results of this year's Copenhagen City Heart Study, "perhaps the most significant study to date on the relationship between health and alcohol," according to Safer. Published in the British Medical journal, the government-supported study revealed that subjects who consumed wine daily were much less likely to die during the 12-year study period than consumers of other alcoholic beverages or non- drinkers. Among more than 13,000 men and women aged 30 to 70 who were tracked from 1976 to 1988, wine consumers had half the risk of dying as those who never drank wine.
"In conclusion," Morten Gronbaek of the Institute for Preventive Medicine in Copenhagen and colleagues state, "our study shows that light and moderate wine drinking, in contrast with beer and spirits drinking, is associated with a strong dose-dependent decrease in all-cause mortality, attributable to a decrease in mortality from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease as well as from other causes."
In discussing these conclusions with Safer, Dr. Gronbaek suggested that wine's antioxidants may, as other antioxidants have been reported to do, have a protective effect against cancers. While other scientists concur, this theory is only speculative at this time.
"Now we drink 30 percent more wine than we did 20 years ago... and heart disease has decreased by 30 percent accordingly. "
Contributing to the significance of the Danish study is the fact that this is one of the most thorough wines specific studies completed in a population outside of France or other traditional wine-drinking regions. In fact, as Safer noted in his broadcast, Derunark was practically a non-wine drinking country until it entered the European Common Market about 20 years ago. "Now we drink 30 percent more wine than we did 20 years ago," Dr. Gronbaek explained, "and heart disease has decreased by 30 percent accordingly."
The experts interviewed also addressed the issue of breast cancer in women and specified that the association with alcohol is unproven. Dr. Gronbaek noted that moderate consumption of wine by women lowered their risk of overall mortality, including cancers. Safer further pointed out that 46,000 women die annually of breast cancer while more than 500,000 die from heart disease. Although not discussed in the "60 Minutes" segment, recent results from the Harvard University Nurses' Health Study included a decreased incidence of total cancer or breast cancer for women who consumed up to 1.5 drinks per day. Another recent study conducted by noted breast cancer expert, Matthew P., M.D., reported that women who drank wine actually had a seven percent reduction in breast cancer risk, which Dr. Longnecker also suggested may be due to wine's potent antioxidant compounds.
The program also addressed the importance of the pattern of alcohol consumption, contrasting the benefits of the European pattern of regular daily mealtime consumption with the more detrimental American pattern of binge drinking. Dr. Ellison suggested that failure to teach responsible drinking patterns contributes to alcohol abuse in the United States.
The broadcast concluded with Dr. Ellison commenting, "I think that data now are so convincing that the total mortality rates are lower among moderate drinkers. It seems quite clear that we should not do anything that would decrease moderate drinkers in the population.",
More than 90 scientific reports have been published since 1991, providing strong evidence for the wine, alcohol and health phenomenon. These findings clearly point out that moderate wine consumption can be part of a healthy lifestyle.

Moderate consumption of wine, meaning one to two glasses per day, may actually be good for your health according to Dr. Curtis Ellison, Chief of Preventive Medicine at Boston University (Moderate Wine Consumption and Health: A Scientific Perspective). Historically, wine has been recommended by physicians for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia, to help vegetarians increase their mineral absorption, and to help reduce the incidence of troublesome sleep disorders. The traditional use of wine with meals offers many benefits including aiding the digestive process, stimulating the intake of nutrients and helping reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by reducing cholesterol.
You may have heard the term "French Paradox" which refers to the fact that per capita alcohol consumption in the form of wine, and saturated fat intake in France are very high, but levels of coronary heart disease in that nation are relatively low. Researchers have discovered that one reason for the low rate of coronary heart disease is the presence of phenolic compounds such as "resveratrol" in wine, especially red wine. Studies show that resveratrol lowers LDL cholesterol (the so-called "bad") while elevating HDL cholesterol levels (the good cholesterol) which helps to clear arterial walls of harmful deposits (Mississippi Agricultural & Forestry Experimental Station, Vol. 58, No. 2).
Dr. Arthur Klatsky, chief of the Division of Cardiology at the Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente Medical group monitored 8,000 people for 10 years. The results (published in Alcohol and Mortality: A New, Prospective Kaiser Permanente Study, Annals of Internal Medicine, 117, 1992) showed that people who drink one or two glasses of wine per day live longer and are less likely to die from all causes than either abstainers or heavy drinkers. No one should consume alcohol and operate a motor vehicle or machinery, and people with problematic drinking in their family histories should likewise stay away from alcohol.
Indeed, scientific researchers repeatedly have found that moderate daily wine consumption actually appears to be more beneficial than either zero consumption or over-consumption. A healthy lifestyle also includes regular exercise and a diet which is low in fat and high in fresh fruit, vegetables, and grains. A glass of wine can be both pleasurable and relaxing and has a favorable influence on mood and sociability, some important ingredients of well-being.

1. Non-drinkers have approximately the same level of cardiovascular death as heavy alcoholics. Moderate drinkers have about half this level. Recently, strong evidence has been discovered to extend this 50% protective effect to strokes (cerebro-vascular accidents). The existence of this "U-curve" has been verified from the study of many different populations from all over the world. I would like to point out that many different study technologies have been used to arrive at this same conclusion.
Three things appear to be responsible here. The first is the prevention or reduction in oxidation of that bad cholesterol, LDL (low density lipoprotein), which reduces or prevents scarring of the artery. The second is preventing the platelets from becoming sticky and thus forming clots. The third is the production of nitric oxide, which causes restricted blood vessels to open to allow more oxygen-rich blood to reach heart muscle or brain tissue.
2. Wine is a significant aid in the treatment of both anorexia and obesity! The wine has to be dry (no sugar). Isn't this amazing? How can this be? In obesity, 4 to 5 ounces is given at the major meal or at bedtime. The average weight loss was twice as great as the controls in the study. The explanation of this paradox appears to rest in relaxation of anxiety and emotional tension. (Anorexia is a condition characterized by excessive weight loss.)
3. Bad effects of old age can be relieved by a glass of wine. The majority of hospitals in California have wine on their menu. It really can reduce the dependence on "heavies" like Thorazine. It's amazing what a glass of wine can do. Their faces light up. They feel like socializing. Their appetite improves. Their self-esteem rises. They have a flood of happy memories. In short, life is worth living.
4. Moderate drinkers are, on the average, of higher intelligence than either non-drinkers or heavy drinkers. Moderate drinkers routinely have higher education status than non-drinkers.
5. On the subject of that "Contains Sulfites" label: Did you know that your body produces sulfites each and every day. In fact, every 24 hours your body produces sufficient sulfite to require 100 bottles of wine to be so labeled!!! Sulfite production is a normal by-product of most forms of life. It is not surprising to discover that even yeasts produce sulfites!
So... Even though the winemaker makes wine that is completely organic (i.e. uses no sulfite at all), he still may need to label his wine "Contains Sulfites." Just keep in mind that most wines contain very little sulfite. It is a non-problem for 99.9% of people.
6. True allergies to wine are extremely rare. This is my area of expertise. I was a physician in active practice for 25 years, and actively looking for wine allergies. I never saw a single confirmed case! Three examples of allergy to wine (or specifically to egg-white, a fining agent used in wine) have been uncovered in a computer-aided search of medical literature. It is that rare!
7. The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome occurs only in the chronic alcoholic. Hard drug use, heavy smoking and under nutrition produce similar fetal defects. So what factor does what is often difficult to determine. The question remains, "Does moderate wine intake have any affect at all?" There probably is more support for fewer medical problems! For example, there appear to be fewer fetal lung problems with moderate mothers. More study is needed.
8. Auto accidents are not increased in areas of high wine sampling. Good examples of this are California wine country Highways 29, 12 and parts of 101. There are wine bars every 200 yards. Yet when statistics are compared to highways of equal density, the level of accidents is not increased.
9. Liver disease is decreasing during a period of increasing wine consumption and decreasing spirits consumption. Everyone knows that cirrhosis is a very serious liver ailment. Chronic alcoholism is its number one cause. In recent years cirrhosis has decreased by 12%. This appears to be following the reduction in consumption of spirits. I must conclude, changing people's drinking habits over to wine is saving lives, here as well as in cardiac deaths.
10. Red wine contains anti-cancer compounds. The components thought to be responsible for this are antioxidant compounds. At least 25 antioxidant compounds have been discovered in wine, especially red wine. The most famous of these is resveratrol. It is stronger antioxidant than Vitamin E (and everyone knows that Vitamin E is one of the strongest antioxidants you can take). But two other compounds in wine, epicatechin and quercetin, are twice as strong as resveratrol! One example of the protective effect: The U.S. Government's Center for Disease Control found that endometrial cancer (lining of the uterus or womb) is decreased by 83% in women who consume 12 or more drinks per week.
11. Bones are more dense in both men and women with moderate wine consumption. After menopause, osteoporosis becomes a very serious problem in women. Hip fractures are notorious. Dense bones are resistant to fractures.
12. Frequency of the common cold is reduced, or at least the symptoms are reduced, by moderate wine consumption. It is an exciting possibility that certain elements in wine bolster our immunity. Nobody will be surprised if it turns out to be those antioxidant compounds again.
